Winter is over

With warm spring sunshine bathing the slopes of Port Bannatyne golf course this weekend the postponed fixture in the Mail on Sunday with Kilbirnie was played in absolutely fantastic conditions for golf and so it proved as the home team emerged victorious with the results as follows
I.L.MacLeod half v G Fulton half
J Paterson 1 v A Blackwood 0
J Dunn 1 v G Brown 0
G Dunn 1 v A Gilmour 0
D standaloft 1 v P Harkins 0
4.5 0.5
Which sees Port bannatyne safely through into the third round. So to Sunday and the final of the Port Inn sponsored Winter League and the top game was between Ian Shaw and Mike Manvell and Jamie Jardine and Andy Durrant however due to a freak accident at work Andy cut his left arm seriously and was unable to play so stepped in Harry Slaven to try to finish off the seasons work however Jamie and Harry ran into an in form Ian Shaw and Mikey with Ian recordind no fewer than nine threes in the match with Mike delivering the coup de grad at the fifteenth thus giving Ian and Mike their second consecutive league title well done lads. The next huge match was for the wooden spoon and however unlikely, involved Donald and Francoise we think that this is the first time that the club champion has been involved in this match with Stevie Officer and Jim Muldoon making up the other half of the match this game went all the way to the last with Donnie and Frankie 1 up going onto eighteen I have never seen a more relieved man in all my life as Frankie managed to three putt from ten feet to get the half making sure the the name Standaloft did not end up carved in wood this honour would belong to the very fragile looking Stevie Officer and Jim Muldoon
So onto the prize giving the captain thanked all who took part this year and all who worked hard to make this happen he welcomed and thanked Nick and Charley proprietors of the Port Inn for their sponsorship and support once again Jim Bicker presented a bouquet to Charlie and we all sat down to a fine spread by Janey and ably assisted by Christopher after which we were entertained by a weal kent face in the shape of big Neil Gillies who conveyed some colourful and enlightening stories to the members by the end of his stint he seemed a bit emotional and had to sit down a big thanks must go to Ian who put together and ran the quiz and also to Jack for mission impossible the annual sweepstake was won by super sub big Hughie who won £60 first prize John Hebditch was second with £ 30 and Harry won third £15 the coupon which had run for 12 weeks had accrued the princely sum of £355and was halved between Pete Manvell and Steve Howrie as a team and that man again big Hughie well done lads you will manage the maths yourself Liz! The rest of the days results were game 2 Jack Paterson & Andy Williamson beat Ted Mc Donald and Jimmy Gordon game 3 Mark Crichton & David Reid beat Hector & Hector Whitelaw game 4 Davy Driver and Taff Barnsley beat John Marshall & Graham Fisher game 5 Jim Bicker & Iain Mc Donald beat Robert Jardine & Cameron Keane game 6 Pete Manvell & Steve Howrie beat Gordon Peacock & Bobby Peddar
Game 7 Jimmy Dunn & Jimmy Standaloft beat Tommy Howat & Davy Bodys
Game 8 Neil and David Whitelaw beat Graham Dunn & Robert Cassidy
Game 9 I L MacLeod & John Preston beat Donnie Mc Dermot
Gamed 10 Gordon Hillis And Bob Sutherland beat John Hebditch & Robert Mc Arthur
This weekend sees the start of the new season and on Sunday the subscription medal will be played so you can all start working towards the Glenburn in January I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members all the best for the new season lists will be up early this year for the match play competitions and will be drawn early to try to give some more time and flexibility to playing ties on time as last year the re were finals not played out which is not really satisfactory and not very fair on the players who completed their games on time there is a copy of procedures on the locker room wall and this will be followed this season or disqualifications will follow
Volunteers are still being sought to help out on a Tuesday night with the juniors Robert Mc Arthur should be contacted on this matter the club would like to thank all who assisted in the moving of the bar and the general revamp of the clubhouse having had a couple of functions with the new set up it has been deemed a success .

Ceud Mile Failte
A hundred thousand welcomes

Port Bannatyne Golf Club is located on the beautiful and historic Isle of Bute, in Scotland. It is an ancient, distinctive, and hospitable golf club where green fees are affordable and visiting golfers are made most welcome.

Our gaelic greeting ('Ceud Mile Failte') is symbolic of scenery and atmosphere. Although the island lies in the Clyde Estuary in the south west of Scotland—and is therefore easy to reach—the Higland Boundary Fault runs neatly through the middle of Bute just a few miles south of our course. So the vistas and landscapes that surround you while playing are truly Highland in their characteristics. If you only play here once, we promise you will carry the memories of your day on our course in your heart for many, many years.
