Winter Handicap by Webmaster @ 13:02 GMT

Winter Handicap
7 souls braved the wind and rain on Sunday to contest the first ever Winter Handicap which has replaced the Winter Trophy. Despite the weather the CSS was 65 and this was mainly due to two players, John Marshall and David Driver who both had net 66 with John winning the competition by virtue of the better inward half. David can take consolation in the fact that he had the only two of the day.

This Week-end
the November medal is on Sunday with the usual ballot times.

Newcomers Share the Spoils by Webmaster @ 15:36 GMT

2 newcomers to the Club in the shape of Gordon Whitelaw and Jim McKirdy shared the spoils of the JMF Tankard kindly sponsored by Alistair and David Fergus. Both had net 64's, but Gordon came out on top with a better inward half relegating Jim to second place. Thanks to the generous sponsorship though, both walked away with a fair haul. Gordon added extra value as he was nearest the pin at the 10th which won him extra goodies. Mike Ivory returned a net 67 which beat Alec Greer Jnr by virtue of the better inward half for third place. Nearest the pin at the 18th was visitor Bill Robertson. A healthy of 26 turned out for the competition but, yet again, it was hit with rain which in turn caused quite a few NR's and a CSS of 66. The Club's thanks to Alistair and David for their sponsorship and hope that maybe next year we can play in decent weather.

October Medal
A fiery breeze took its toll on the 27 competitors of the October Medal with no fewer than 11 of them carding NR's. However, as is typical in all sorts of weather, someone in the field always "murders" the course. On this occasion it was the very experienced Walter Maclean. His 79 less 16 gave him a net score of 63 which was 4 shots better than anyone else. His efforts won him the second class medal and with a CSS of 68 a healthy cut from the handicapper's knife. The scratch medal was won by Jamie Jardine with a gross 76. David Driver enjoyed his brief sojourn into the first class ranks by winning the first class with a net 71 but being outside the buffer zone he now joins the second class brigade until earning yet another cut.

This Week-End
The new Winter Handicap, replacing the Winter Trophy, is this Sunday with the usual ballot times.

Oh Harry - He Wins the Quaich! by Webmaster @ 14:15 GMT

Harry Slaven blew away the blues of a rather average season for him when he won the Greenkeeper's Quaich and the Charity Medal with a superb net 59. His gross 72 less 13 was way and above his best round this season and won him a very lucrative haul of prizes since this was a duel competition with both the Greenkeeper's Quaich and The Charity Medal being run in tandem. In second place was Robert Turnbull with a net 62 and David Driver, yet again in the prizes, taking third place with his net 64.
Thanks are due to John Marshall for his generous sponsorship of the day and to Ian Shaw for his organisation of the Charity Day Medal. Normally, money raised at the Port Club's Charity Day would go to a local charity but with the aftermath of the tsunami in the Indonesia area the decision has been made to send the proceeds to Oxfam to assist with the relief there.
Full Prizelist was:
Special award for Endeavour went to Freddie Phillips: Longest Drive at the 2nd - Donald Standaloft: Nearest the Pin at 4/16 - Graham Fisher: Nearest the pin at 10 - Martin Young: Nearest the Pin at 18 - Robert Jardine
Best scratch - 68 - Donald Standaloft: 3rd - 64 - David Driver: 2nd - Robert Turnbull: 1st - 59 - Harry Slaven

Medal Finals Winners

An added extra to the day's proceedings on Sunday was the Medal Finals. Winner of the scratch category was Donald standaloft with his 68. Robert Turnbull turned back the years by winning the first class section with his net 62 and David Driver took the second class section with his net 64. CSS was 65.

News

This Sunday is the October Medal followed by The JMF Tankard on the 18th. The Winter Handicap is the following week (25th).
The Rothesay Motor Services Winter League sections have now been drawn and a full winter fixture list will be available in the Club foyer. The Winter League will have 4 leagues this winter with 6 pairings in each league. The top 2 pairs will qualify for the "main places" knockout stages. Yet again the Club is grateful to David Reid and Rothesay Motor Services for their continued sponsorship of this competition and its popularity is obviously still at a peak with 48 golfers participating.
It is hoped that this format will leave the flexibility needed to cope with the worst of the weather during winter Sundays but "fun" days will be organised throughout the league fixtures to keep all members swinging during the winter season.

Ian Shaw has organised a homecoming event for the club in the shape of a Scottish evening on the 7th November. The evening will have whiskey tasting, Scottish food, music and dancing. tickets are available from Ian - they are limited so get yours early

Ceud Mile Failte
A hundred thousand welcomes

Port Bannatyne Golf Club is located on the beautiful and historic Isle of Bute, in Scotland. It is an ancient, distinctive, and hospitable golf club where green fees are affordable and visiting golfers are made most welcome.

Our gaelic greeting ('Ceud Mile Failte') is symbolic of scenery and atmosphere. Although the island lies in the Clyde Estuary in the south west of Scotland—and is therefore easy to reach—the Higland Boundary Fault runs neatly through the middle of Bute just a few miles south of our course. So the vistas and landscapes that surround you while playing are truly Highland in their characteristics. If you only play here once, we promise you will carry the memories of your day on our course in your heart for many, many years.
