Young Guns Win Through as the young ones are presented there trophies by Webmaster @ 14:50 GMT

The semi-finals of the Rothesay Motor Services Winter League were as differant as chalk and cheese with one going to the last green and the other a 7 & 6 "dog license" drubbing. Young guns Whitelaw & McCready, playing together in their first Winter League, narrowly defeated last year's finalists Black & Pedder on the 18th green after a real ding dong battle and will play in next Sunday's final. The other semi was between the long in the tooth pairings of McDonald & Slaven and Williamson & Paterson. It is not often that a Winter League game finishes very early but this one did with McDonald & Slaven handing out a severe lesson to their old rivals to reach the final. It came as no surprise that the "bragging rights" were to the fore in the clubhouse and will be for some time to come.
Other results were:
Peacock & Renfrew bt Durrant & Jardine W/O: Ware and Cormack bt Fisher & McFarlane 6&5: Greer & Greer (Jardine) bt Bicker & Marshall 2up: Driver & Barnsley bt Muldoon & Officer W/O: Whitelaw & Whitelaw bt Maltman & MacPhail 2&1: Preston & MacLeod bt Crichton & Lintermans 4&2:

Qualifiers Settled! by Webmaster @ 11:51 GMT

There was never any doubt that both section qualifiers would come down to the wire but in the end the final placings in both leagues were decided by a toss of the coin. In League A the 3rd & 4th places had to be decided in this manner but unluckiest on the day were Bicker & marshall who, having led League B for so long lost out for the 4th qualifying place to Whitelaw & McCready via a head or tails shout. Winners of League A were Reid & manvell on 19 points with Williamson & Paterson qualifying in 2nd spot with the same number of points. 3 pairings had 17 points but Crichton & Lintermans had been beaten by both Black & Pedder and McDonald & Slaven so they ended up in 5th spot. league A was topped by Standaloft & Dunn with 20 points with Renfrew & Peacock closing in on second with 19. 3rd in this league was was Durrant & Jardine with 18. then came the 2 pairs on 17. Both had identical wins, they had a halved match against each other, count back was the same - so - a toss of the coin decided who went through in the 4th qualifying spot. Whitelaw & McCready won the toss so they qualify for the knockout stages.
Results for Sunday were:
League A: McDonald & Slaven bt Greer & Greer 3&2: Whitelaw & Whitelaw bt Black & Pedder 5&3: Williamson & Paterson bt Driver (Jardine) & Barnsley 5&4: Crichton & Lintermans (Shaw) bt Melville (Cormack) & Ware 5&3
League B: Preston & MacLeod bt Fisher & McFarlane 3&2: Renfrew & Peacock bt Whitelaw & McCready 1 up: Dunn & Standaloft bt Muldoon & Officer WO: Maltman & MacPhail bt Durrant & Jardine 2 up:
It was ironic that in the "bounce" game Marshall & Bicker beat the winners of League A, Reid & Manvell by the margin of 4&3 and fail to qualify! Such is the game of golf!
Final League Placings were:

League A Points League B Points
Reid & Manvell 19 Dunn & Standaloft 20
Williamson & Paterson 19 Renfrew & Peacock 19
McDonald & Slaven 17 Durrant & Jardine 18
Black & Pedder 17 McCready & Whitelaw 17
Crichton & Lintermans 17 Bicker & Marshall 17
Whitealw & Whitelaw 16 Preston & Macleod 16
Driver & Barnsley 14 Fisher & McFarlane 16
Greer & Greer 12 Maltman & MacPhail 11
Melville (Cormack) & Ware 7 Muldoon & Officer 7

A Good Week-end for Tommy! by Webmaster @ 16:52 GMT

Tommy Wilkinson has obviously found the video, dusted it down and watched it again as his two medal rounds over the week-end were the best of the day. In the February Medal his net 63 was equal best score of the day but he was beaten for the second class medal, by virtue of the better half, by John Preston with both players on net 63's. However he went one shot better on the Sunday for the March Medal shooting a net 62 which was the best score by 5 shots on the day and won him the second class medal and a well deserved cut from the handicapper's knife.
It was also a good week-end for 2's with no fewer than 7 players over the 2 days shooting 2's. On Saturday it was Graham Fisher, Donald Standaloft and David Greer and on Sunday it was Tommy Wilkinson; now hiring out the video for a small sum, Robert Turnbull, Pete Manvell and Jack Paterson.
Donald Standaloft won both the scratch medals over the 2 medals with a gross 70 on Saturday and a gross 69 on Sunday. Meanwhile in the first class category Graham Fisher's net 64 won on Saturday with Robert Turnbull's net 67 good enough to take the March first class section by virtue of the better inward half over Ian Shaw.
The CSS for the February Medal was 65.
The CSS for the March Medal was 66.

Members are asked to check handicaps prior to their next round.

This Week-End
It is the final qualifying, nail biting, down to the wire matches in the Rothesay Motor Services Winter League this Sunday with the following matches and times:
8.40 - Greer & Greer V McDonald & Slaven: 8.50 - Fisher & McFarlane V Preston & MacLeod: 9.00 - McCready & Whitelaw V Peacock & Renfrew: 9.10 - Black & Pedder V Whitealw & Whitelaw: 9.20 - Muldoon & Officer V Dunn & Standaloft: 9.30 - Williamson & Paterson V Driver & Barnsley: 9.40 - Melville & Ware V Crichton & Lintermans: 9.50 - MacPhail & Maltman V Durrant & Jardine: 10.00 Reid & Manvell V Bicker & Marshall

Other News
A very successful and productive AGM was held last week with the members hearing the Club's situation going into the new season of 2009 - 2010. Retiring Captain thanked all the members and especially the committee for their support over the year and stated what a pleasure and a privilege it had been to be able to Captain Port Bannatyne Golf Club. Treasurer Mike Ivory and Match Secretary Jim Bicker both gave detailed reports about their respective remit areas before new Captain Robert Jardine was welcomed into the "Chair".
It was decided that a new category of membership would be added this year: that of "Intermediate member" with the same status and membership fee as Student membership. The new category is to allow those school leavers between the ages of 18 and 21, who do not go on to college or university, the opportunity of a very reasonable rate of membership on leaving the Junior section prior to full adult membership. Subscription fees were increased by £10 with the exception of the OAP membership which went up by £15 and the Junior section where no increase was added.
Secretary - Andy Stevenson, Treasurer - Mike Ivory, Match Secretary - Jim Bicker, Assistant Match Secretary - Donald Standaloft and Social Convenor - Ian Shaw were all returned status quo with Graham Dunn accepting the important position of Junior Convenor. Graham Barnsley and David Reid were elected to join Harry Slaven and Pat O'Sullivan as ordinary committee members.

Andy Stevenson won the Geriatric Jaunt on Tuesday with 28 points.

Ceud Mile Failte
A hundred thousand welcomes

Port Bannatyne Golf Club is located on the beautiful and historic Isle of Bute, in Scotland. It is an ancient, distinctive, and hospitable golf club where green fees are affordable and visiting golfers are made most welcome.

Our gaelic greeting ('Ceud Mile Failte') is symbolic of scenery and atmosphere. Although the island lies in the Clyde Estuary in the south west of Scotland—and is therefore easy to reach—the Higland Boundary Fault runs neatly through the middle of Bute just a few miles south of our course. So the vistas and landscapes that surround you while playing are truly Highland in their characteristics. If you only play here once, we promise you will carry the memories of your day on our course in your heart for many, many years.
