Low Scoring Dominates Week-end
by Webmaster @ 14:58 GMT
Both Saturday and Sunday's competitions were dominated by low scores with both having a CSS of 65. On Saturday Robert Turnbull won the RNLI Charity Medal with a net 61 and on Sunday David Reid continued his recent good form by topping the qualifiers in the Hector Linden Trophy with a similar 61. 38 players contested this qualifier indicating that this season is going to be a very competitive one at the Port. Calum MacPhail, having won the Salmon leap on Friday night, took second spot, and a good handicap cut, with his 62. David will now play Donald Standaloft whose net 65 put him in fourth with David Whitelaw's net 63 taking him through in third place to play Calum. David had the only 2 of the day and with the very healthy entry his pocket money just increased over the next few weeks. Players to organise the semi-final and finals themselves. This Week-End The May medal is on the card for Sunday with the usual ballot. Other News The knockout competitions close entry on Thursday. The mcfadyen Trophy Mixed Scramble entry is on the foyer notice board as is the entry for the Seniors Open and The Grouse. Members are reminded that no play in competitions can take place from Monday to Saturday prior to 9.00 am.

Club Says "Goodbye" to John
by Webmaster @ 15:15 GMT
A "surprise party" and presentation was held for a valuable and popular member on Saturday night when the Club said "Goodbye" to John Hebditch. John leaves for pastures new this Friday when him and his wife take up residence in Ayr. A loyal and hard working member for the Club John is a legend in hius own lifetime for his culinary skills in the Club's kitchen. Catering for all functions, team matches and Sunday Winter Leaguers, John's lasagne, fish and chips and certainly his home made apple pie and ice cream were firm favourites with all Club members. His commitment to the Club shone through even on Saturday when he arrived, apron in hand, ready to help Janey Jardine who was supposedly catering for a party. However the surprise on his face was evident as he soon realised that the get together was actually for him. A good night was had by all and John was presented with a framed photograph of the course, taken from the bell at ! the 11th green looking down on the bay, by Captain Robert Jardine. Good luck to you John from all at the Club with our sincere thanks for all that you have done and we will certainly miss your smiling face but maybe not your awful jokes. "Pres" Hits Form To Take Spring Handicap John Preston hit form on Sunday to take the Spring handicap with a net 62 - and that with a 6 at the par 3 10th. Second was David Reid and it was good to see David finally hit a vein of form with his net 63. CSS for this competition was 65. Winning Start to League Campaign The Firth of Clyde League action got underway on Sunday with the Port at home to Routenburn and a very impressive score of 4 - 0 in favour of the Port gets their campaign to a very healthy start. Donald Standaloft, Ian Shaw, David Beattie, Graham Fisher, Ted McDonald, David Whitelaw, Jack Paterson and David Greer, making his debut, all saw the Club through to a fine win. Five Man Team Triumph in Mail on Sunday Classic While the Firth of Clyde Team were battling Routenburn over the Port course our 5 man Mail on Sunday team were doing the same against Routenburn but at Routenburn. An excellent win by 3:2 means the Port now marches on into Round 4. All the matches were close with Jamie Jardine winning 2&1, Alex Greer (Jnr) won at the last as did John Black and Robert Jardine lost at the last with John Marshall being defeated 4&3. Seniors lose to Rothesay While other teams were on a winning streak, unfortunately the seniors first game in the Bute League this season was a defeat by 3-1 to Rothesay at Rothesay. This Week-End Saturday is the RNLI Medal with entry by donation. Sunday is the Hector Linden qualifier with the top 4 net scores going through to the knockout stages. If members are unavailable for the knock out stages then they are asked to indicate this on their returned scorecard. Other News Andy Cormack won the Salmon leap on Friday with 27 points and managed this total without scores at the 8th and 18th. Closing date for knockout competitions is the 30th April.

Graham continues with good form
by Webmaster @ 16:39 GMT
Graham Fisher continued to display his recent good form by winning the scratch category in the April Medal with a gross 70 that, sadly, contained a 7. A CSS of 64, and with no fewer that 5 players carding that score or better, is an indication of just how good the weather and the course was playing on Sunday. Winner of the first class section was Robert Turnbull whose net 64 beat Jamie Jardine by virtue of the better inward half. The same scenario occurred in the second class section where Robert Jardine beat Tommy Wilkinson by a better inward hald score with both players on net 64's. No fewer than 4 two's were recorded on Sunday with Ted McDonald, Harry Slaven, Jamie Jardine and Francois Lintermans all sharing the rollover 2's sweep. This Week-end Only two weeks into the new season and already the port is buzzing with competition. This Sunday is the Spring Handicap but the Club also has 2 team matches on the go. The Firth of Clyde League Team makes its season's debut against Routenburn at home while the Mail on Sunday 5 Man Team make inroads to this competition by playing in the 3rd round against Routenburn away. This team is: Jamie Jardine: Hector Whitelaw: Alex Greer (Jnr): Robert Jardine & John Black. Travel arrangements and information regarding this match is on the notice board. Members playing in the Spring Handicap are asked to note that the first tee is booked between 12.30 and 1.30 and are asked to time their entry into the Spring Handicap accordingly to avoid the 1st tee and 13th tee at this time. Other News Jim Bicker made it two weeks in a row by winning the Geriatric Jaunt on Tuesday with 29 points. The Salmon Leap has reverted to its Summer time slot of Friday evenings with a 5.30 ballot. Knockout competition entries are posted on the locker room notice board with all having a closing date of the 30th April.

"Old Guns" win RMS Winter League
by Webmaster @ 13:03 GMT
The more experienced pairing of McDonald & Slaven held their nerve over young pretenders McCready & Whitelaw to win the first ever Rothesay Motors Winter League. However, the "young guns" did not make it easy and despite being 2 down with only 3 to play, they won 16 and 17 to take the game down the 18th. Neither of the two managed to make a 3 and the title went to the two more experienced men in the final. In the 3rd & 4th place play off Paterson & Williamson improved on last week's performance of the 7&6 defeat - this week they only lost to Black & Pedder by 6&5! Other game results were: Reid & Manvell bt Peacock & Renfrew 6&5: Dunn & Standaloft bt Jardine & Durrant W/O: Driver & Barnsley bt Maltman & MacPhail 2&1: Crichton & Lintermans bt Fisher & McFarlane (Standaloft) 3&2: Bicker & Marshall halved with Ware (Shaw) & Cormack: Greer & Greer bt Preston & MacLeod (Jardine) 2&1: Whitelaw & Whitelaw bt Muldoon & Officer 5&4 The festivities then began with a superb meal cooked by Janey Jardine followed by the prizegiving with the prizes being given out by Jan Reid. The Club gratefully acknowledges the very generous sponsorship given to this year's winter League by David Reid & Rothesay Motor Services and for all members - here's to next year with the hope that the weather is kinder! Subscription & January Medal The weather turned really nasty over Saturday morning and affected, not only the entry into this competition, but also the scoring. The gusty wind and rainy squalls made it very difficult for the early birds on the course and of the 16 morning starters only the first 4 managed to stay the distance and return a score. Surprisingly however, the 2 afternoon starters' scores did not reflect the slight improvement in the weather. Jimmy Dunn won the Subscription Medal with a net 66. This medal was run in conjunction with the postponed January Medal and again Jimmy's 66 was best in the first class category. Graham Fisher's scratch 75 was good enough to win him this section with Jim Bicker's net 68 good enough to take the second class medal. This Week-end The April Medal takes place this Sunday with the usual balots Other News The Geriatric Jaunt was won by Jim Bicker with 28 points. The Salmon Leap has now moved to Fridays with a 5.30 ballot - first week this week - April 10th Fixture Lists and membership shoe tags are available from Mike Ivory. Members are asked to complete a personal details slip as the Club is updating its membership data base. These slips are in the foyer and once completed should be placed in the "returned cards" box - thank you!
