Some You Win Some You Lose by Webmaster @ 11:09 GMT

Port Bannatyne were host to both of Rothesay Golf Clubs teams with the Firth of Clyde fixture being played at the same time as the annual social game.
Firstly to the firth of Clyde and the first game Ian Shaw and Jim O Donnell come from behind 2 down playing the 16th but a finish of two, three, two was good enough to see of the pairing of George Reynolds and George Hansom in the second game Jack Paterson and Jamie Jardine lost by the slimmest of margins one down to Stevie mc Donald and Kevin Bowie the third game and Graham Dunn and Neil MacLeod lost 2 & 1 to Tommy Reynolds and new club Champ Gordon mc Lean game four and Robert Turnbull & David Reid the third lost big to John Gilchrist and Calum Mc Kirdy 7 & 5 and in the final game Jimmy Dunn and David Whitelaw lost by one hole to Angus Murray and John Shaw which made the score 4 to 1 Rothesay which flattered them slightly as so many games could have gone either way this leaves Rothesay in a strong position going into the final fixtures.
The Ports social team faired a little better under the guidance of captain I L MacLeod who sent himself out in the first game with John Preston they triumphed 1 up over Jimmy Burke and B mc Killop in game 2 Jim Muldoon and Robert Jardine beat Jim Milligan and Grieg Fisher 1 up game 3 and new import John Maltman and Mike Ivory gave team captain Frank Lee and Gordon Shaw a good seeing to 5 & 3 game 4 and Craig Charker and Henry Tait beat David Driver and Andy Cormack 3 & 1 Game 5 was halved this was between John Hebditch and Iain Mc Farlane Kenny Thompson and Ross Lowrie
In the final game this also went Rothesays way as Hue Charker and Mike Dodds beat Bob Sutherland and Calum McPhail making the overall result three and a half to two and a half
Both Rothesays team captains George Hanson and Frank Lee thanked Port Bannatyne for their hospitality and congratulated Janey for the quality of the catering Frank the presented team captain I L Mac Leod with the trophy in reply Ian gave us a few little wisdoms from his vast repertoire then firth of Clyde captain Robert Turnbull thanked Rothesay for their kind words and wished them continued success for the rest of the season.

Cowal Building & Plumbing Seniors Open by Webmaster @ 18:05 GMT

Cowal Builders cement reputation

A turnout of almost fifty testified to the ongoing popularity of Port Bannatyne's annual Seniors Open, sponsored by Cowal Building and Plumbing Supplies.
A fast-running course benefitting from this season's global warming, made scoring difficult, but no one seems to have told Rothesay's Tommy Duncan. His nett 64 off a handicap of 6 was enough to win the 50-60 section, scoop the sweep and take away both the Seniors Open Cup and the shield for the best scratch (70). In second place in the "juniors" was Port newcomer John Maltman (11) 65, with David Bodys (9) 67 of the home club in third place.
In the over 60 section, with pensions needing augmenting, first place was taken by Port specialist I.L.MacLeod (13) on 67. One stroke adrift were Brian Hughes(Rothesay) (21) and John Preston (16), with the copious prizemoney being decided in favour of the former only on the basis of a better last 6 holes.
With Tommy Duncan already the recipient of a hefty voucher as the overall winner, George Hanson's 72 saw him taking the scratch cash. George's two at the 18th, the only one of the day, a second equal in the sweep and the longest drive at the 6th made it a lucrative outing to the north end for him. No one succeeeded in stopping the ball on the skating rink of the 10th, but greenkeeper John Marshall used his intimate knowledge to finish nearest to the pin at the 18th.
Ronnie Hair, manager of Cowal Building's Rothesay branch, handed out his firms much-appreciated largesse to the fortunate winners.
Results:-

50-60 1. T.Duncan (6) 64
2. J.Maltman (11) 65
3. D.Bodys (9) 67

Over 60 1. I.L.MacLeod (13) 67
2. B.Hughes (21) 68
3. J.Preston 16) 68

Taverna open by Webmaster @ 22:26 GMT

Normal service was resumed this year after last years wash out of the Taverna Open and after a grey start sunshine bathed the slopes of the Port. With this very popular competition coming earlier in the year and assuming a new format in the form of a stableford competition things were very close. There were some early birds out to get round in time to play cricket in the afternoon one of these being Graham Barnsley AKA TAFF whose 41 points was on the board for all to have a go at the closest was Ian Shaw who missed out by only one point on 40pts followed closely by Jack Paterson with 39pts Sponsor and proprietor of the Taverna Bar Dougie Clark was accompanied by his wife Linda and Daughter Zoe, Dougie thanked the Port for their hospitality and all who helped the day to happen, he then handed over the Zoe to present the prizes to both the winners on the golf course and from the raffle which was in aid of the Sprowl play area and the children’s pantomime trip for which we would like to thank Dougie who then in turn thanked the people who donated to the raffle. Nearest the pin at the 10th winner was Alec Greer jnr nearest the pin at the 18th was won by the evergreen I. L. MacLeod and nearest the pin at the 6th was won by R Jardine the best outward half went to John Marshall the best inward half and welcome back Andy Cormack the worst half was shared by two members who will remain nameless to protect the innocent the big prize in the raffle was won by David Bodys who is now the proud owner of an I Pod but was last seen having trouble tuning it in there were a further dozen prizes which cheered up a few who missed out on the course A big thank you to the Taverna for another great day and look forward to next year. This weekend coming is the social match against Bute the Port have never won away against Bute and we are still needing a couple of players if you are available phone Stav on 01700500195 then on Sunday the Port are at home to Gourock and on Wednesday the Summer Cup which is sponsored by Ian Shaw this is every Wednesday in June and July and takes the form of an eclectic competition so the more rounds you play the better chance you have so don’t leave it to late.

Grouse Open by Webmaster @ 18:59 GMT

David Greer Wins The Grouse

David Greer won The Grouse Open on Sunday by virtue of the better second round over David Driver. With both players recording an aggregate score of 130 David G’s, score of 67:63 beat David D’ score of 66:64. Once again, and this after nearly 40 years sponsorship, Matthew Gloag and Company continue to provide Port Bannatyne Golf Club with the most generous of sponsorships provided in liquid form as was in evidence on the prize table. The early rounds started in blazing sunshine but as the day progressed the duller conditions suited those players who actually tackled the 36 holes. With due respect to the two David’s the round of the day had to be that of Jim Muldoon. With an 18 handicap limit the 22 handicapper netted a net 63 in the morning round giving him an actual handicap score of 59. However having scored a TWELVE at the first then this actually means a handicap score of a net 54. No-one there on Sunday can remember anything lower and it means Jim takes a cut of almost 5 shots in one go!! Another in the same boat was Calum MacPhail who carded a 63 in the pm round. With his handicap at 25 then this was an actual 56 and he too cuts his handicap by 5 shots. Donald Standaloft took the scratch prize with 2 steady rounds of 70.

Ceud Mile Failte
A hundred thousand welcomes

Port Bannatyne Golf Club is located on the beautiful and historic Isle of Bute, in Scotland. It is an ancient, distinctive, and hospitable golf club where green fees are affordable and visiting golfers are made most welcome.

Our gaelic greeting ('Ceud Mile Failte') is symbolic of scenery and atmosphere. Although the island lies in the Clyde Estuary in the south west of Scotland—and is therefore easy to reach—the Higland Boundary Fault runs neatly through the middle of Bute just a few miles south of our course. So the vistas and landscapes that surround you while playing are truly Highland in their characteristics. If you only play here once, we promise you will carry the memories of your day on our course in your heart for many, many years.
