by Webmaster @ 22:47 GMT
The Ports social team had its first outing of the year on Saturday as they played hosts to Bute Golf Club over a sun drenched course with little or no wind to speak of the views from the course on Saturday were nothing short of stunning with the surrounding country side in full summer bloom a treat in its self but to the golf as two 10 man teams went head to head for the annual trophy first blood to the Port in the first match as Captain John Bunyan and John Kernighan went down 4&3 to I.L MacLeod and Robert Jardine the youthful MacLeod finishing it on his 33rd hole of the day. Bute struck back in the second match as Bobby Spiers and J Girvan put Brian Mc Killop and Calum Spiers to bed 3&2. The pick of the day was the pairing of Gordy Mac Intyre and Mike Ivory who beat Jim Mc Allister and Alistair Mc Farlane 4&3 Jim Birdied the first and showed his intentions for the round only to lose the hole to a net two, which sort of set the tone for the remainder of this match Jim quoted something about dust bins , thunder and flatulence. Game four Robert Cassidy and Andy Cormack were strong enough to win over Fraser Robinson and Ian Mc Dougall on the seventeenth clinching the win for the Port. So to game five David Brydon and L Ferguson a.k.a Fergie saw off Jim Kirkwood and Pete Barnett this is the third time this season David has beaten Pete so he gets to keep him please pick up you prise at your convenience David. Yet again, another extremely successful mixed scramble evening at The Port. This time in competition for the McFadyen Trophy sponsored by the McFadyen and Paterson families. 11 teams took to the course on a lovely evening and, as usual, the competition was close and the prizes generous. What could be better? An absolutely lovely evening, perfect for golf, 12 holes of mixed scramble, a fantastic meal prepared by the ladies of the Club and prizes galore, not only in the actual competition but also in the raffle. Winners on the night were Eileen Barker, Harry Slaven and last minute substitute David Whitelaw. Only 0.2 behind were Liz Archibald, Graham Dunn and John Marshall with Lelah McGuigan, Jimmy Dunn and Jim Bicker in third place. Other News Unfoftunately the superb home 4 - 0 win against Routenburn at home recently was overturned on Sunday by Routenburn when they defeated the Port by the same score at their home course. Disappointing but not the end of the world for the Port's ambitions to league success this season. The Club has been drawn against Kilmacolm in the next round of The Mail on Sunday Classic. Further details to be announced. June is a busy month for the Club and there are sheets on the board for the Social Match against Bute and Rothesay, The C& J Gordon Trophy plus Open competitions coming up. This Week-End Saturday sees our Firth of Clyde 5 man team take on the might of the rest of the Firth of Clyde Clubs over Cowal. Sunday is the ever popular Grouse Open with tee times and pairings already posted in the Clubhouse.

Ceud Mile Failte
A hundred thousand welcomes
Port Bannatyne Golf Club is located on the beautiful and historic Isle of Bute, in Scotland. It is an ancient, distinctive, and hospitable golf club where green fees are affordable and visiting golfers are made most welcome.
Our gaelic greeting ('Ceud Mile Failte') is symbolic of scenery and atmosphere. Although the island lies in the Clyde Estuary in the south west of Scotland—and is therefore easy to reach—the Higland Boundary Fault runs neatly through the middle of Bute just a few miles south of our course. So the vistas and landscapes that surround you while playing are truly Highland in their characteristics. If you only play here once, we promise you will carry the memories of your day on our course in your heart for many, many years.
