Port's busy 3 in 1!!
by Webmaster @ 12:36 GMT
A scheduled busy week-end it was and that is exactely what it turned out to be. Hectic in fact! However it was extremely successful and not only showed that the Club is going in the right direction but also that the Club has appointed a greenkeeping staff, in John and David, that displays a huge amount of hard work, effort and pride in the upkeep of the course. Friday - The Ken Chisholm Memorial Quaich The last of the mixed evenings displayed a healthy turnout of 9 teams despite the distraction of Stephen and Alison's wedding, the Club wishes them both all the very best. Winners on the night were Margaret McMillan, Jimmy Dunn and Andy Cormack. However, once again, the Chisholm family pulled out all the stops in their generous sponsorship of the evening and the Club's thanks to them for their continued partnership with the Club in remembering a very respected and well liked past member. Prizelist: 1st - M. McMillan, Jimmy Dunn & A. Cormack: Runners Up - M. Wilson, J. Bicker & J. Gordon: 3rd - L. McGuigan, H. Slaven & C. MacPhail: Nearest pin at 10 - Gents - P. Ware, Ladies - B. Campbell: Nearest pin at 18 - Ladies - L. Archibald, Gents - D. Whitelaw: Longest Drive for Gents - D. Whitelaw: Straightest Drive for Ladies - M. McMillan: Saturday - Hanson Builders Ltd 4 Man Team What a huge success this competition was and plans were made on the day to change the day to a Sunday to allow it to become even bigger and more successful. The conversation in the Clubhouse afterwards was just how enjoyable and different the format was and credit must be given to Geotge Hanson, not only for his generous sponsorship, but also for the foresight in choosing this particular format. As with Friday evening however, this competition perhaps did not have the biggest entry possible, the wedding plus Rothesay's Firth of Clyde League battle with Cowal taking their toll on numbers. Although a very healthy turnout of some 11 teams - 44 golfers - did play. The early leaders were the 4 Jays made up of Jimmy Dunn, Jamie Jardine, Jack Paterson and John Marshall who posted a best 2 out of 4 score of 119. This kept the lead until the Rothesay Motor Services team of David Reid, Ian McFarlane, Andy Cormack & Bobby Melville pipped them by one shot to card 118. This team had two scores of 66 and 52 with the 52 score carding no less than 6 two's! This was always going to be hard to beat and so it proved with this 4 taking the innaugural Hanson Builder's Ltd title and accepting the stunning trophy from Davina Hanson. PrizelistLWinners - 118 - Rothesay Motor Services: 2nd - 119 - The 4 Jays: 3rd - 120 - Rothesay Golf Club (Jimmy Ewing, Ewan McTaggart, Hugh Charker & K. Thomson): 4th - 121 - Shaw & Co (I. Shaw, J. Thompson, D. Beattie & M. Ivory) Longest Drive at 2nd - J. O'Donnell: Nearest pins - 10th - D. Driver, 18th - I. McFarlane: Sunday - The Jimmy Whitelaw Cup Yet again a very healthy turnout of members competed for this 2 x 12 hole competition. AND, yet again, the generous sponsorship of The Whitelaw family was on display. Winner of the trophy was John Black with his combined score of 78 which was made up of a 40 followed by a 38 - impressive stuff John! However, this competition has a tradition of Whitelaw family members being high on the prizelist - well there are so many of them competing that the law of averages does come into play! This year was no different with no fewer than three of the family on the prizelist. Prizelist: Winner - J. Black (78): 2nd - G. Dunn (84): 3rd - H. Whitelaw (Not Senior but Faither!) (85): Scratch - J. O'Donnell (86): Best score A.M. - D. Whitealw: Best Score P.M. A. Cormack: Nearest Pin at 10 - D. Bodys: Nearest Pin at 18 - H. Slaven: Longest Drive at 6 - R. Jardine. PHEW!!! Donald makes it 3 in a Row
by Webmaster @ 13:04 GMT
Donald Standaloft won the Port Championship for the third year in a row on Saturday by defeating 16 year old Anthony O'Donnell in the 36 hole final. Having both come through the knockout stages, Donald by defeating Graham Dunn 4&3 in the quarter final and Stephen Renfrew at the 19th in the semi, whilst Anthony had defeated Neil MacLeod at the 18th in the quarter and Jack Paterson at the 17th in the semi, both looked towards Saturday's final with high hopes: Anthony at 16 looking for his first Championship and Donald trying to equal Stan Gaston's feat of 3 in a row. It was Anthony who started the stronger wby winning the first but that was only to last till the thirs where Donald brought it back to all square. On a day when the wind was blowing fiercely it was important that both players played their tee shots well and stayed out of the rough and this was to be the main story of the day. by the 27th hole in the afternoon 11 holes had been won or lost by errant tee shots straying into the rough and making it difficult to play any kind of approach shot. After the 3rd Donald went on the 3 trail with 4 of his next 5 holes showing a 3 on his card making him 4 up after 9. Anthony won 10 but then gave it back at 11 only tyo win 12 and, in fact, Donald was 5 up after 17 but Anthony showed his fighting spirit by winning the 18th with a graet rescued 3. So, time for a Janey Jardine lunch, which was magnificent, and then back to do battle in the afternoon. Anthony came out of the traps in the afternoon like a rocket and birdied the first to win back to nly 3 down and then proceeded to win the 4th to only go two down but unfortunately this was as close as it got. D Errant tee shots cost Anthony dear and he lost 5, 7, 8 and 9 to par to go 5 down after 9 holes in the afternoon round. The 10th was halved in 3's but then Donald went birdie, birdie at 11 and 12 and the Championship was his for the third year in a row. Commiserations must go to Anthony who certainly can hold his head up high and must be certain in the knowledge that the Championship will be his one day. Congratulations to Donald on a fantastic achievement of 3 in a row. John wins the Arthur Slack John Marshall won the Arthur Slack by the margin of 3&2 over Andy Cormack in the 18 hole final. Well done John! July Medal & Anchor Tavern Shield A CSS of 67 indicates the very windy conditions but Freddie Phillips had the best score of the day to win not only the second class medal but also the Anchor Tavern Shield. His net score of 63 also qualifies him for the Magners Cider regional Qualifying Round at Kilmalcom in September. Along side him will be Donald Standaloft who won the scratch medal with a gross 68 and the first class medal with a net 65. Alec Greer wins the MacMillan Trophy Alec Greer won the MacMillan Trophy by defeating David Whitelaw in the final. Ceud Mile Failte
A hundred thousand welcomes
Port Bannatyne Golf Club is located on the beautiful and historic Isle of Bute, in Scotland. It is an ancient, distinctive, and hospitable golf club where green fees are affordable and visiting golfers are made most welcome.
Our gaelic greeting ('Ceud Mile Failte') is symbolic of scenery and atmosphere. Although the island lies in the Clyde Estuary in the south west of Scotland—and is therefore easy to reach—the Higland Boundary Fault runs neatly through the middle of Bute just a few miles south of our course. So the vistas and landscapes that surround you while playing are truly Highland in their characteristics. If you only play here once, we promise you will carry the memories of your day on our course in your heart for many, many years.
