Heavyweight Return to Form! by Webmaster @ 16:29 GMT

Turnbull ends his lean season!
Buy his own admission Robert Turnbull's season has been a lean one but one Sunday this all changed when he and his partner, Hugh Archibald, won the prestigious Standaloft Greensomes. It is an ongoing feature of Port Bannatyne Golf Club to encourage as many types of golf format as is possible over their course and Sunday was no exception. 26 pairs contested the Standaloft Greensomes indicating just how popular different formats of competition really are with the membership. As is the normal with sponsorship competition at The Port, the prizelist was extensive, and the Club's thanks go to Donald and Jimmy for their generosity in sponsorsing this greensome.
On the day Robert & Hugh were comfortable winners with a net 59, 2 shots ahead of Ian Shaw & Jim Thompson. In third place was Graham Dunn and consistent winner over this season, John Black. Fourth, by virtue of the better inward half was Robert Jardine and Andy Cormack. Visitors George Hanson and John Gilchrist took the scratch prize with a 67 and it was nice to see this pair and George Reynolds with Alan Smith coming out to support the Open Competition - thanks guys!
Full prizelist:
Winners: R. Turnbull & H. Archibald: 2nd I. Shaw & J. Thompson: 3rd J. Black & G. Dunn: 4th R. Jardine & A. Cormack: Nearest pin at 4 = R. Jardine: At 10 = I. Shaw: At 18 = A. Greer (J): Longest Drive at 2 = I. Shaw
The Club gratefully acknowledges the generousity of both Donad and Jimmy in the runnng of this competition..

The Hilton/Slaven Shield
Monday's outing to Gourock proved to be an extremely successful day for Ted McDonald as he won the Hilton/Slaven Shield for the Club's outing, which this year went to Gourock. A great day was had by all, despite the weather, and a full and, less than distinctive prizegivng was carried out after a great meal.

Firth of Clyde Wee Trophy
What can be said? This was a fabulous effort from the team. To win the Firth of Clyde Wee Trophy at any time is a huge success but to win it over a course as long as Gourock, and by eight shots, is nothing short of historic. Over the last 20 years Port Bannatyne has won the Wee Trophy, over their home course and Blaimore and Strone but to win it over Gourock, and by eight shots - well - well done the lads!
John Marshall, John Black and Robert Jardine were the count scores but ably supported by Gordon Peacock and Ian MacFarlane their success was phenominal. Congratulations to you all!

This Week-end
Friday night is The Past Captain's Jug with a 5.30 ballot over 12 holes from tha back tees. HOWEVER, this competition is dependant on the work progress over the week regarding the green work. It is likely that this competition WILL proceed, but, Past Captain's' cooperation is asked if postponement is required.
The Rover Cup on Sunday is definately posponed.

Junior Championship
Young Scott Dunn and Joe Livingston will contest the Junior Championship final. Good luck to you both!

District Cup Dunn + Dusted! by Webmaster @ 16:27 GMT

District Cup
Graham Dunn's gross 64 less 6 was the foundation on which his winning score of 125 for the two rounds was based. His net 58 on the Saturday was an amazing score when all around were carding NR's. On the Sunday his net 67 was the third best score of the day and low enough to secure him victory over the two rounds of the competition. Iain Macleod showed a return to some kind of form by carding a 67 on the Saturday and a 66 on the Sunday giving him the runner up spot.

Zavaroni Trophy
Neil Macleod made up for getting beat by his father by 1 shot for the runer up spot in the District Cup by taking The Zavaroni Trophy on the Sunday with his net 64. Father Iain however was in second spot with a 66.
CSS for Saturday and Sunday was 65.

Junior Championship
The qualifying round for the Junior Championship was held on Tuesday 5th August with the semi finals on the 12th and the final the week after.

How low can they go? by Webmaster @ 14:44 GMT

Rothesay Motors High Handicap Open
A field of 44 and a prizelist that would guarantee 21 of that field a prize is an indication of the generosity of the sponsorship provided by David Reid & Rothesay Motors for this Open Competition for those with a handicap of 7+. Top of that prizelist was David Greer with a staggering net 58 which will make him a single figure handicap player for the first time. It was always going to be the winner and in fact David won the Trophy by 5 shots at the end of the day with Graham Fisher's net 63 earning him second spot. Third, by virtue of the better inward half was Taff Barnsley and that despite a "bad shoulder"!
Jamie Jardine continued his good form throughout the season by winning the best scratch of the day with a gross 74.
Main prizewinner:
1st - D. Greer (58): 2nd - G. Fisher (63): 3rd - G. Barnsley (65 BIH): 1st Scratch - J. Jardine: 2nd = Scratch - J. Dunn, A. Greer (J) & M. Crighton: Nearest pin at 4 - J.Jardine: Nearest pin at 10 - M. Crighton: Nearest pin at 18 - D. Reid: Straightest Drive - D. Reid: longest Drive - R. Jardine: Best overseas player - G. MacFarlane
Other prizes such as worst gross, worst net, worst at any one hole, most 6's are probably best left unprinted!
CSS was 65
August Medal
Graham Dunn won the scratch medal on Sunday with a 69 but also earned himself the first class medal as well with his net 63 which beat Jamie Jardine by virtue of the better inward half. Donnie McDermid returned to good form with his net 63 and he won the second class medal.
The CSS was 64.

Course Record Broken!
Donald Standaloft broke his own course record in the final round of the Summer Cup on Wednesday with an amazing gross 60. His card read:
444343434 (33) 222344343 (27) = Gross 60
Not only did this beat his previous record by one shot it also won him the Summer Cup by one shot relegating Jamie Jardine to second spot.

This Week - End
The District Cup runs on Saturday and Sunday with the best aggregate score taking the Trophy. However, The Zavaroni Trophy is up for grabs for the best net second round on Sunday.

Port's busy 3 in 1!! by Webmaster @ 12:36 GMT

A scheduled busy week-end it was and that is exactely what it turned out to be. Hectic in fact!
However it was extremely successful and not only showed that the Club is going in the right direction but also that the Club has appointed a greenkeeping staff, in John and David, that displays a huge amount of hard work, effort and pride in the upkeep of the course.
Friday - The Ken Chisholm Memorial Quaich
The last of the mixed evenings displayed a healthy turnout of 9 teams despite the distraction of Stephen and Alison's wedding, the Club wishes them both all the very best. Winners on the night were Margaret McMillan, Jimmy Dunn and Andy Cormack. However, once again, the Chisholm family pulled out all the stops in their generous sponsorship of the evening and the Club's thanks to them for their continued partnership with the Club in remembering a very respected and well liked past member.
Prizelist: 1st - M. McMillan, Jimmy Dunn & A. Cormack: Runners Up - M. Wilson, J. Bicker & J. Gordon: 3rd - L. McGuigan, H. Slaven & C. MacPhail: Nearest pin at 10 - Gents - P. Ware, Ladies - B. Campbell: Nearest pin at 18 - Ladies - L. Archibald, Gents - D. Whitelaw: Longest Drive for Gents - D. Whitelaw: Straightest Drive for Ladies - M. McMillan:

Saturday - Hanson Builders Ltd 4 Man Team
What a huge success this competition was and plans were made on the day to change the day to a Sunday to allow it to become even bigger and more successful. The conversation in the Clubhouse afterwards was just how enjoyable and different the format was and credit must be given to Geotge Hanson, not only for his generous sponsorship, but also for the foresight in choosing this particular format. As with Friday evening however, this competition perhaps did not have the biggest entry possible, the wedding plus Rothesay's Firth of Clyde League battle with Cowal taking their toll on numbers. Although a very healthy turnout of some 11 teams - 44 golfers - did play. The early leaders were the 4 Jays made up of Jimmy Dunn, Jamie Jardine, Jack Paterson and John Marshall who posted a best 2 out of 4 score of 119. This kept the lead until the Rothesay Motor Services team of David Reid, Ian McFarlane, Andy Cormack & Bobby Melville pipped them by one shot to card 118. This team had two scores of 66 and 52 with the 52 score carding no less than 6 two's! This was always going to be hard to beat and so it proved with this 4 taking the innaugural Hanson Builder's Ltd title and accepting the stunning trophy from Davina Hanson.
PrizelistLWinners - 118 - Rothesay Motor Services: 2nd - 119 - The 4 Jays: 3rd - 120 - Rothesay Golf Club (Jimmy Ewing, Ewan McTaggart, Hugh Charker & K. Thomson): 4th - 121 - Shaw & Co (I. Shaw, J. Thompson, D. Beattie & M. Ivory) Longest Drive at 2nd - J. O'Donnell: Nearest pins - 10th - D. Driver, 18th - I. McFarlane:

Sunday - The Jimmy Whitelaw Cup
Yet again a very healthy turnout of members competed for this 2 x 12 hole competition. AND, yet again, the generous sponsorship of The Whitelaw family was on display. Winner of the trophy was John Black with his combined score of 78 which was made up of a 40 followed by a 38 - impressive stuff John! However, this competition has a tradition of Whitelaw family members being high on the prizelist - well there are so many of them competing that the law of averages does come into play! This year was no different with no fewer than three of the family on the prizelist.
Prizelist: Winner - J. Black (78): 2nd - G. Dunn (84): 3rd - H. Whitelaw (Not Senior but Faither!) (85): Scratch - J. O'Donnell (86): Best score A.M. - D. Whitealw: Best Score P.M. A. Cormack: Nearest Pin at 10 - D. Bodys: Nearest Pin at 18 - H. Slaven: Longest Drive at 6 - R. Jardine.

Donald makes it 3 in a Row by Webmaster @ 13:04 GMT

Donald Standaloft won the Port Championship for the third year in a row on Saturday by defeating 16 year old Anthony O'Donnell in the 36 hole final. Having both come through the knockout stages, Donald by defeating Graham Dunn 4&3 in the quarter final and Stephen Renfrew at the 19th in the semi, whilst Anthony had defeated Neil MacLeod at the 18th in the quarter and Jack Paterson at the 17th in the semi, both looked towards Saturday's final with high hopes: Anthony at 16 looking for his first Championship and Donald trying to equal Stan Gaston's feat of 3 in a row.
It was Anthony who started the stronger wby winning the first but that was only to last till the thirs where Donald brought it back to all square. On a day when the wind was blowing fiercely it was important that both players played their tee shots well and stayed out of the rough and this was to be the main story of the day. by the 27th hole in the afternoon 11 holes had been won or lost by errant tee shots straying into the rough and making it difficult to play any kind of approach shot. After the 3rd Donald went on the 3 trail with 4 of his next 5 holes showing a 3 on his card making him 4 up after 9. Anthony won 10 but then gave it back at 11 only tyo win 12 and, in fact, Donald was 5 up after 17 but Anthony showed his fighting spirit by winning the 18th with a graet rescued 3. So, time for a Janey Jardine lunch, which was magnificent, and then back to do battle in the afternoon.
Anthony came out of the traps in the afternoon like a rocket and birdied the first to win back to nly 3 down and then proceeded to win the 4th to only go two down but unfortunately this was as close as it got. D Errant tee shots cost Anthony dear and he lost 5, 7, 8 and 9 to par to go 5 down after 9 holes in the afternoon round. The 10th was halved in 3's but then Donald went birdie, birdie at 11 and 12 and the Championship was his for the third year in a row. Commiserations must go to Anthony who certainly can hold his head up high and must be certain in the knowledge that the Championship will be his one day. Congratulations to Donald on a fantastic achievement of 3 in a row.

John wins the Arthur Slack
John Marshall won the Arthur Slack by the margin of 3&2 over Andy Cormack in the 18 hole final. Well done John!

July Medal & Anchor Tavern Shield
A CSS of 67 indicates the very windy conditions but Freddie Phillips had the best score of the day to win
not only the second class medal but also the Anchor Tavern Shield. His net score of 63 also qualifies him for the Magners Cider regional Qualifying Round at Kilmalcom in September. Along side him will be Donald Standaloft who won the scratch medal with a gross 68 and the first class medal with a net 65.

Alec Greer wins the MacMillan Trophy
Alec Greer won the MacMillan Trophy by defeating David Whitelaw in the final.

CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS by Webmaster @ 12:27 GMT

CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS
With a CSS of 65 and 66 it was obvious that the competition for places in the Championship and Arthur Slack knockout stages were keen. Top of the Championship qualifying list was David Beattie with his 2 rounds of 67 and 69 respectively but more impressive were his two best halves of 33 out on Saturday and 33 in on Sunday. Second on the list was Stephen Renfrew, who had a round of 68 on Saturday and a 67 on Sunday with a very impressive inward half of 29 on Sunday which included two 2's and 4 3's. Defending Champion Donald Standaloft did not have the best of days on Saturday with a round of 79, which included a 9 at the 7th but he produced a saving round on Sunday with a 70 to qualify in 5th place. Youth has its place in the knockout stages with young Anthony O'Donnell in the knockout stages woith his qualifying aggregate of 146. Other qualifiers are Graham Dunn (143), Neil Macleod (145), Alec Greer (Jnr) (151) and Jack paterson (152).
The Arthur Slack qualifying list was headed by Robert Jardine with an aggregate net score of 135. Other qualifiers for the handicap championship are, Hector Whitelaw, Andy Cormack, Iain Macleod, Jim Kirkwood, John Marshall, Walter Maclean and Ted McDonald.

Some You Win Some You Lose by Webmaster @ 11:09 GMT

Port Bannatyne were host to both of Rothesay Golf Clubs teams with the Firth of Clyde fixture being played at the same time as the annual social game.
Firstly to the firth of Clyde and the first game Ian Shaw and Jim O Donnell come from behind 2 down playing the 16th but a finish of two, three, two was good enough to see of the pairing of George Reynolds and George Hansom in the second game Jack Paterson and Jamie Jardine lost by the slimmest of margins one down to Stevie mc Donald and Kevin Bowie the third game and Graham Dunn and Neil MacLeod lost 2 & 1 to Tommy Reynolds and new club Champ Gordon mc Lean game four and Robert Turnbull & David Reid the third lost big to John Gilchrist and Calum Mc Kirdy 7 & 5 and in the final game Jimmy Dunn and David Whitelaw lost by one hole to Angus Murray and John Shaw which made the score 4 to 1 Rothesay which flattered them slightly as so many games could have gone either way this leaves Rothesay in a strong position going into the final fixtures.
The Ports social team faired a little better under the guidance of captain I L MacLeod who sent himself out in the first game with John Preston they triumphed 1 up over Jimmy Burke and B mc Killop in game 2 Jim Muldoon and Robert Jardine beat Jim Milligan and Grieg Fisher 1 up game 3 and new import John Maltman and Mike Ivory gave team captain Frank Lee and Gordon Shaw a good seeing to 5 & 3 game 4 and Craig Charker and Henry Tait beat David Driver and Andy Cormack 3 & 1 Game 5 was halved this was between John Hebditch and Iain Mc Farlane Kenny Thompson and Ross Lowrie
In the final game this also went Rothesays way as Hue Charker and Mike Dodds beat Bob Sutherland and Calum McPhail making the overall result three and a half to two and a half
Both Rothesays team captains George Hanson and Frank Lee thanked Port Bannatyne for their hospitality and congratulated Janey for the quality of the catering Frank the presented team captain I L Mac Leod with the trophy in reply Ian gave us a few little wisdoms from his vast repertoire then firth of Clyde captain Robert Turnbull thanked Rothesay for their kind words and wished them continued success for the rest of the season.
